Societies 2: Indexing collective materials from the BT Archive tour


From the BT Archive tour last term, I chose these letters (from the public for the improvement/’naturalisation’ of telegraph poles) to contribute to the group for indexing:

This electric circuit diagram is a way of indexing the BT Archive in a way that echoes the development of telecommunications. Typically in circuit diagrams, a circle with a cross represents a bulb. Parallely, a box with a cross in it represents an image in UX wireframing. Here, the ‘bulbs’ are images from the archive. The zigzags in an electric circuit represent resistors, and the slower articles of communication (e.g. letters in the archive) are in a resistive part of the circuit to convey a slower pace of communication. ‘Switches’ connect different categories/circuits together in the index.
